Acadian-Cajun Surnames |

By the time of the first census in 1671, there were 47 Acadian surnames (that left descendants). Many of today's Acadian-Cajuns go back to these families. These earliest Acadian settlers to leave descendants are in the following table. |

| It seems that 60 more colonists (55 men, 5 women) arrived in 1671. Since only 36 new surnames appear in the 1686 census, some of them may have left Acadia by that time. In addition, 6 of the names that appeared in the 1686 census never showed up again; these 6 names are: Cochu, Cottard, Desorcis, Dubreuil, Fardel, and Martil. Here are the 30 surnames that appear in the 1686 census and apparently stayed for a while. |

From 1686 to 1710, less than 100 new colonists came to Acadia. Most were soldiers who had been stationed in the area. The 1714 census shows 77 new names in Acadia. Additional names that join the Acadian communities include: |
