Hébert Reunion Wrap-Up

If you were able to make it to the reunion, we're sure you enjoyed it. For you to remember, and for those who unfortunately couldn't make it ... here is a written report on the events.  A few images can be found at the bottom of this page.

Things began early Friday morning in downtown Abbeville.  A reception room (Magdalen Place) had been rented and provided a roomy, cool place to congregate.  There were 3 computers set up with the genealogy, and a display with the trees of the first few generations of Héberts.  Joe & Edwin (Hébert, of course) helped everyone with their genealogy at the computers.  If your line wasn't available in full, you may have been asked to send us the information.  We'd like to add anyone that we've missed.
A series of tables held numerous items for sale ... genealogy books on Hébert, plaques, framable items (such as the print that Robert Dafford did for CMA), other books, pins, and T-shirts.  There was a silent auction for a framed copy of the Dafford print.  Information on the sale items can be found online.  They took orders for the Hébert Afghan; it should be done in a few weeks.  Storytelling was done (a couple of blocks away at City Hall) by Geri LeBlanc and Sheila Hébert Collins.  Despite the heat, some brave souls took walking tours of the town.  The Acadian Cultural Center (a couple of blocks away) was open for tours and a video presentaion of the Acadian story.  It also had an art exhibit by Chestee Harrington. Joe and Tim Hébert gave a historical/genealogical presentation in the courthouse.
That evening, the opening ceremonies were held at Magdalen Place.  Warren Perrin (pres. of CODOFIL and the fellow who's working on the petition to England RE: the Acadians) was the main speaker.  We also had music (by Les Petits Chanteurs --- a group of children in Acadian garb and an adult singing group, Les Amis Louisianaises).  Afterwards, we went outside to unveil the memorial marker.  The sun had set so it wasn't too hot.  Singing and dancing followed.
The next day people were milling around before 9.  By early morning, over 700 people had registered.  An estimated 1000 people participated in at least one of the events over the 3 day weekend.  People came in to purchase items and work on their genealogy.  Meanwhile, a couple of blocks away, they were cooking the giant 5000 egg omelet.  Music was being played in the square outside.  The sales and genealogy people packed up at Magdalen Place at about 3 p.m..
The French Mass, led by Monsignor Provost, was held at 5:30.  Afterwards we stayed in the Church for the Closing Ceremonies at 6:30.  Brian Comeaux, president of CMA, spoke in a mixture of French and English.  The Reunion was officially closed by Russell Gaspard, president of the Hébert Association.
The next day, a number of participants in the Hébert Reunion joined 3 other families at Acadian Village in Lafayette.

The American Press posted a couple of articles on the Hébert Reunion.     Article 1   Article 2
