When the ships carrying the Acadians arrived at Pennsylvania, they were detained on board for months. "Trapped" in the crowded ships, many perished. Smallpox was a major cause of death. When finally allowed to leave ship, they found that their children were often taken as labor for other settlers. Most of the Pennsylvania Acadians eventually left for Canada or French colonies.
