SURNAMES
By the time of the first census in 1671, there
were 47 Acadian surnames (that left descendants). Many of today's
Acadian-Cajuns go back to these families. These earliest Acadian
settlers to leave descendants are in the following table.
If you click on the name, you will be taken to a page dedicated
to that surname.

Some of these, such as Aucoin, Blanchard, Boudreau, Bourg, Breau, Comeau, Gaudet, Girouard, Hebert, LaTour, Martin, and Terriau, had already branched off into 2 or more families. Also, there were some surnames where the family either moved, died off, or left no male sons to pass on the surname, such as Poulet, Gougeon, Labatte, Pesseley, LeFebvre, and Blou. Though not on the census, there were also LaTours and Bellisles (LeBorgnes) in Acadia.
It seems that 60 more colonists (55 men, 5 women) arrived in 1671. Since
only 36 new surnames appear in the 1686 census, some of them may have left
Acadia by that time. In addition, 6 of the names that appeared in
the 1686 census never showed up again; these 6 names are: Cochu, Cottard,
Desorcis, Dubreuil, Fardel, and Martil. Here are the 30 surnames
that appear in the 1686 census and apparently stayed for a while.

From 1686 to 1710, less than 100 new colonists came to Acadia.
Most were soldiers who had been stationed in the area. The 1714 census
shows 77 new names in Acadia.

DIT NAMES
Sometimes a person would take on another name, based on where they were from, their job, a friend or relative's name, etc. One case in which this happened is with Roger Caissy. Some of his descendants used the surname Caissy dit Roger. Somewhere down the line, some of his descendants used the Roger part and just disregarded the Caissy part. So you have the Cajun surname Roger that actually descends from Caissy. Other descendants continued using the Caissy name. Bob Quintin wrote a book on the subject, The "Dit" Name: French-Canadian Surnames -- Aliases, Adulterations, and Anglicizations in 1993. It covers 33,000+ dit names. It also talks about how some French names were turned into their English equivalents ... LeBlanc became White, Doiron became Gold, etc.

A list of
Acadian names at the time of the Exile was compiled by Ms.
Brenda Dunn, of the Canadian Parks Service for the Grand Pre National Historic
Site. This list may not be complete. For example, it lists only one variation
of some names (Benoit dit Labriere, Hebert dit Manuel, etc.), when the
original name is much more common (but left out)..

Also, this isn't a complete list; I've left some out.
