| The geography of Acadiana ... the area of south Louisiana settled by the Acadians ... is primarily of two types. To the southwest, there are prairies. These large flat areas are good for ranching and crops. To the east (and in parts of the west), there are bayous. While the land may be higher and more wooded near the bayou, it drops in elevation as you move away. Many Acadians had land that was good for planting only on the front acres because the back of their property was marsh. |
