In western Acadiana, the Cajun economy was centered around ranching and farming. Many Cajuns made a living raising cattle. Others learned to raise crops such as rice. In eastern Acadiana, the Cajun economy was centered around farming and wildlife. The major crops were cotton and sugar cane. Many Cajuns fished, trapped, and hunted wildlife for food and to make money.
