| While it is true that some Cajuns became successful
in business and politics, the average Cajun lived a very simple lifestyle.
In fact, many outsiders viewed them as lazy. They would work only
enough to provide for their family. This included farming, taking
care of the livestock, and hunting/fishing. This would occupy many
of their daylight hours. Once the work was done, they enjoyed socializing
at parties and dances. Their evening light sources in the early days
were candles or oil lamps. Kerosene lamps became commonplace in the
19th century. |
